For this paper, choose either nationalism OR imperialism and find two examples of each in specific countries/regions from the period we’ve covered (examples: imperialism in India and China or nationalism in Italy and Germany). Then write a 1500 word essay comparing how nationalism or imperialism unfolded in these places. Consider what was similar? What was different? What reasons can you give for why these cases may have been similar or different?

The following link has some great advice on how to write comparative essays in terms of how to structure the introduction, body, and conclusion of your paper. http://www.ssag.sk/files/How-to-write-a-Comparative-essay.pdf (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

Requirements: Each of the countries/regions in your paper must have a minimum of two sources for support, so four sources total.

One primary source for each country/region. You may find some in the modules or at the following links:

Nationalism: http://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/mod/modsbook17.asp (Links to an external site.)

Imperialism: (Links to an external site.)http://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/mod/modsbook34.asp (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

Also, take a look at the left-hand side of the page for primary sources on various countries during the 19th century. Lots of great stuff there!

The other two sources must be academic secondary sources. You can find these at the FSW library (ebooks or the library’s online history databases like JSTOR are perfect for this assignment).

“Free” internet secondary sources are not allowed for this paper. If you use non-academic sources your paper will not be accepted–so use the library! If you have any questions about using a source, ask me! Librarian Jane Charles’ fantastic research guide is a good place to start your research but feel free to call or email any of the libraries and ask for help finding sources.http://researchguides.fsw.edu/content.php?pid=53130 (Links to an external site.)
