This assignment involves you answering one of the following questions with your response due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time Friday and your comments to three other students postings are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time Sunday.

Your initial answer to the question should be between 250 – 300 words long. Include references and citations where necessary to ensure proper credit and documentation of your sources. You are welcome to include references in addition to the course textbook, just ensure that you use proper documentation.

Your comments to three of your classmates need to be between 100 – 115 words and this does not include any citations / references. This minimum requirement helps to encourage students to go beyond a standard, “I liked your post” and push them to select particular points / examples and discuss them further. Please answer one of the following questions:

1. In the decades leading up the Civil War the North and South developed into two very different cultures. Explain how the democratic republicanism of the North differed from the aristocratic republicanism of the South. Also detail how slavery affected the values of the southern whites. (Chapter 8)

2. Compare the compromise of slavery that was made in 1820 with the compromises that were made in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention. (Chapter 8)

3. Describe the role that the state and national government played in helping develop a transportation system for the United States of America. (Chapter 9)

4. Early presidents, including Andrew Jackson, supported government actions that resulted in forced Indian removal and relocation. Did this forced removal help preserve Indian culture like proponent suggested or did is help destroy Native American culture? Explain your answer. (Chapter 10)
